Specialist Dementia Activity Centres in Bromley borough

A diagnosis of dementia is life changing for both the person and their family

Family relationships and friendships change.

Family carers have less time for work, other family and social commitments or to look after themselves properly. They experience a lot of stress trying to juggle everything.

People with dementia and carers can become isolated at home and their general wellbeing can often get worse.

With the right support, it is possible to live well with dementia

Over 27 years of providing specialist dementia support to help local people live with dementia, we have seen:

  • people with dementia maintaining and rediscovering skills and interests
  • carers being revitalised and become less stressed with regular breaks from caring, whilst the person they care for attends a MindCare centre or has a visit at home
  • old relationships being rekindled or new social connections being made.

By getting support early, a person diagnosed with dementia and their carers can live as well as possible with dementia.

Mary’s Story

Indoor arts activities at Bromley MindCare Dementia Day Centre

“Just a little note to say thank you for all the help, attention and encouragement you give my mum.

As I don’t live near my mum, we have daily telephone conversations  and there is a marked difference in her voice on the days she attends the MindCare Centre. The tone of her voice is upbeat and she is full of excitement, telling me what responsibilities she was given during the day.

As a result, she feels needed and appreciated and part of a community again, which is very important for people with dementia like her.

We’ve also noticed that her memory and conversational skills have improved with the interaction she gets with people at the Centre.”

Dee’s Story

Summer Garden Party and MindCare Dementia Support Centre in Beckenham

“My wife, ‘Dee’, is only 63 and has early onset dementia. I was finding it increasingly hard to understand her dementia and meet her needs.

I was desperate for help and felt very alone.

I found the MindCare Dementia Support Centre via the Internet.

We called in to see them and we were warmly welcomed by the staff and shown round. We could see various groups of activities ranging from baking to arts and crafts and a lovely reminiscence group that Dee joined in.

It was heart-warming to see her interact after such a long time.

The staff displayed patience and kindness and the room had a lovely atmosphere and everyone looked so relaxed and happy.

From the very first meeting I felt like somebody cared and understood how I felt.

Dee now goes to the centre three days a week and I have my life back again… I do not feel isolated as I did before.

With time to myself, I feel that my batteries are recharged to face the challenges that Dee’s dementia brings. I have re-joined my bowls club, which I had to give up over a year ago. With information and tips from the staff, I am handling situations so much better and because of that our home life is so much happier now too.”
