Black South East London Needs Help: Black River Counselling “Devastated” to Turn People Away

Black River Counselling, our vital online mental health service for Black adults in Lambeth and Southwark, is facing a heartbreaking situation. The waiting list has ballooned to over 80 people, forcing us to hit pause on accepting new clients.

Imagine needing help and not being able to access the support you need. Black River Counselling provides a safe space with Black counsellors who understand the unique challenges faced by Black communities. But with resources stretched thin, we can’t take on more right now.

Black River Counselling provides up to eight weeks of free, 50-minute online sessions to Black adults.

Our dedicated Black River Counselling team is a small team with a big mission:  to connect Black communities, who have often not had their needs met by mental health services, with Black counsellors who understand their unique experiences.

“It’s heartbreaking to have to turn people away,” says Christine Thompson, Service Manager for Black River at South East London Mind. “Life throws curveballs, and Black River Counselling is here to help you weather the storm. With your help, we can keep the river flowing and reach more people in need.”

The service has collected a wealth of evidence of what a difference it has made in the lives of people accessing counselling – this is just one example:

“I was really sceptical of therapy, but when I saw I could speak to a Black therapist, that really drew me in. Black River counselling has made me a better father, son, and husband, and I’m so grateful for this” – Reiss, Lambeth

The Call to Action:

We’re asking for your support. Through donations, we can expand Black River Counselling services and reach more people in need. We’ve launched an urgent fundraising appeal for this vital service.

£300 will provide 8 weeks of 50 minute online counselling to someone in need

£3000 will support 10 people for 8 weeks.

Your contribution will directly impact the lives of people struggling with mental health problems:

  • Hire additional Black therapists: More therapists mean a shorter waiting list and quicker access to care at Black River Counselling.
  • Re-open to new referrals – with your help, the team will be able to re-open to referrals and begin to register new clients.
