Earth Day, on the 22nd April, is an annual celebration that promotes sustainability and raises awareness of the need to protect Earth’s natural resources.

In celebration of Earth Day 2023, we asked our Environmental Champions what inspired them to join BLG Mind’s movement to combat climate change.

What are Environmental Champions?

Environmental Champions are a network of staff members who are passionate about making positive environmental changes.

Their main role is to:

  • Set environmental goals
  • Advise colleagues and volunteers on ways to save energy and reduce waste
  • Raise awareness of environmental issues

Environmental Champions: what is their impact?

Since starting on our journey to become a greener and more sustainable organisation, we have:

  • Installed cycle stands
  • Made energy swaps
  • Opted for second hand office furniture
  • Made plans to make our green spaces more biodiverse
  • Reduced our energy use and waste

Meet our BLG Mind Environmental Champions!

We are proud to have ten environmental champions working across the three boroughs of Bromley, Lewisham and Greenwich. We spoke to Alison, Ṣadé, Jasmin, Sarah and Lisa about their role and what inspired them to take action.

Alison Davies, Bromley Community Transformation Project Manager

“I joined the environmental group because any actions we take as an organisation can have a significant impact on the environment.

By reducing our carbon footprint & minimising waste, we can help protect the planet for future generations.

What’s more – having a greener workplace can have health benefits for our team”

Ṣadé Fadero, People Development Administrator

“For me, there’s an inextricable link between the way we treat this earth and other social inequalities (for example environmental racism) & there are countless studies indicating how climate change is detrimental to our well-being.

Jasmin White, Befriending Coordinator

“I’m passionate about social connection and supporting local communities. The environmental emergency is a crisis which impacts us all, our future and our mental health.

I joined BLG Mind’s environmental group so that I can raise awareness about how we can all work together to meet this challenge”.

Sarah Harrison, IPS Employment Specialist

“I became an Environment Champion because I have been passionate about the environment and sustainability for a very long time, I saw it as a chance to learn more about changes I can make to reduce my carbon footprint and share this with others around me.

All positive change, no matter how small is significant. Sharing knowledge and empowering people to make changes in behaviour results in less waste, fewer emissions”

Lisa Johnson-Harper, Facilities Assistant

“Since starting on our journey to become a greener and more sustainable organization. We have made some great energy saving swaps and have installed cycle stands across our sites and have started to make changes to reduce our energy use and waste.

We also have plans to make our green spaces more biodiverse. I’m excited to see where we will be this time next year”
