Dementia Volunteers Win Awards

Baby Steps mum and baby dementia volunteers collect their award from the Mayor of Bromley

Some of the 17 mums and babies who have taken part in the MindCare Baby Steps project collected a Team of Volunteers Award at the Community Links Bromley Volunteer Awards Ceremony from the Mayor of Bromley, Councillor Nicholas Bennett, on Tuesday 11th June 2019.

The Baby Steps project started in 2018 when a local mum wanted go get out more with her young baby while contributing to the local community. Since then, the project has seen 17 mums and babies visit MindCare Dementia Support Centres in Beckenham and Orpington, in an intergenerational dementia project that has helped different groups of local people live well.

The women joining the Baby Steps project have commented that the change of leaving full-time employment to become a mother for a newborn baby has been equally a joyous moment of their lives as well as challenging. The change in identity, relationships and social isolation can be difficult to adjust to and projects like Baby Steps have been a great help.

Clients with dementia attending the MindCare dementia centres have also benefitted. The regular visits from babies and mums have sparked many memories, laughs and conversations about the client’s own experiences of parenting and their children.

The Baby Steps project is now developing with dads and young babies attending the centre.
