Mindful Mums at Royal College of Psychiatrists Event

Karen from Mindful Mums speaking at Royal College of Psychiatrists event

Karen Taylor from Mindful Mums spoke to mental health professionals attending London Perinatal Mental Health Networks Conference held by the Royal College of Psychiatrists in London, on 31 January 2018.

Karen spoke about the Mindful Mums project and importance of it being led by women with lived experience (peer-led) in the community, the value of the shared experience and the outcomes achieved in year one of the project. Sarah Lam, a Mindful Mums volunteer from Lewisham, shared her story about her involvement in Mindful Mums.

During her presentation, Karen highlighted that 1 in 3 women experience anxiety or depression during pregnancy and the first year after birth. However, 34% of women hide their feelings and many others struggle to adjust and maintain their wellbeing during this phase of life.

Mindful Mums is a unique project to address this issue in the London boroughs of Bromley and Lewisham. It provides pregnant women and new mothers with free groups to share experiences, build social connections with other local women and learn skills to manage their own wellbeing, regardless of whether they have a diagnosed or recognised mental health problem.
