Local Organisations Working Together for Dementia Awareness Week 2017

Local charities, public services and businesses have come together for Dementia Awareness Week 2017 (14th – 21st May).

Organisations including Bromley Dementia Support Hub, Bromley Dementia Action Alliance, Orpington 1st, CWJ Solicitors and MyTime Active, are working together to raise awareness about dementia, local services and help people, services and businesses to become dementia friendly.

There are over 4,000 people living with dementia in the Bromley borough – one of the highest rates across London.

With the ageing population, this number is likely to increase so it is more important for local businesses, services and members of the public to learn about dementia and make positive differences to the lives of people with dementia and their family and friends caring for them.

Orpington High Street is leading the way, aiming to become the first dementia friendly High Street in Bromley borough.

Invited guests will have the opportunity to experience what dementia can be like in a virtual and quite powerful experience. Tesco Orpington will be hosting charities and organisations, where members of the public can find out more about local dementia services and support. Odeon Cinema in Orpington will be holding the first dementia friendly screening held in the country in Odeon Cinemas. More information can be found here.

A number of free, 1 hour, Dementia Friends sessions will be taking place across Bromley at local libraries and leisure centres. By attending a Dementia Friends session, you will learn more about dementia and how you can help to create dementia friendly community with a few easy actions.

The full list of Bromley Dementia Awareness Week activities also includes dementia cafes and art/science research workshops for people with dementia and their carers.

“This is a fantastic example of private, public and charity sectors collaboratively working together to help residents of Bromley to live well with dementia,” said Nikki Fishman of the Bromley Dementia Support Hub. “We are excited to be part of Dementia Awareness Week 2017 in Bromley, helping make the borough a more dementia friendly community for everyone living and working here.”
