Having a baby is rarely without its challenges, but having a baby when you’re from a Black, Asian or Ethnic Minority background can make life as a new mum even more difficult to navigate.

Our new Diversity Matters group provides a safe space for mothers of babies 0-12 months to talk about the complexities and issues related to their culture, upbringing and heritage with balancing the challenges of early motherhood.

We also run Creativity for Calm, a space for mums from diverse communities to focus on fun, creative ways of expressing yourself and your feelings about parenthood.

What is Diversity Matters?

Diversity Matters is a Mindful Mums wellbeing group for women of Black, Asian and Ethnic Minority backgrounds.

The group offers a non-judgmental space for women from diverse communities to talk freely about their experiences as new mums.

Diversity Matters is led by trained volunteers with their own personal experiences of managing the challenges of early motherhood from a Black, Asian or Ethnic Minority perspective. As well as being a place to share similarities and celebrate differences, the five-week courses offer an opportunity to connect with other pregnant women and new mums and learn tips and techniques for looking after your wellbeing.

Upcoming groups

All of the following groups are open to women of Black, Asian and Ethnic Minority backgrounds with babies aged 0-12 months.

Booking is essential due to limited spaces; places are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

As this is a Lewisham-specific service, priority spaces are given to Lewisham residents, but mums from Bromley, Greenwich, Lambeth and Southwark are welcome too if space is available.

Music for Mind and Motherhood

Singing can lift our moods and make us feel better, boost our confidence and reduce stress, give us space to express ourselves, and help us to connect with others and with ourselves. For this group, we dive into the magic of singing, and how it can create a space for wellbeing, connection and expression, offering an alternative way in to exploring your journey through motherhood. We will learn songs, practice gentle grounding and sound-making exercises that encourage noticing and presence, and invite creative play where you can contribute your ideas if you wish. And the best bit: you absolutely do not have to “be a singer” to enjoy singing and take part!

Course length: five weeks

When: Wednesdays 11-12.30pm, 24 April – 22 May

Where: Lewisham Unity, Catford SE6 2TS

Diversity Matters: Creativity for Calm

Express yourself! Like our other Diversity Matters groups, our aim is to provide a voice and support for mums from diverse communities, bringing women together to talk about the complexities related to their culture, upbringing and heritage whilst balancing the challenges that come with the first year of motherhood. For this group, the focus is on fun, creative ways of expressing yourself and your feelings about parenthood. This group is a chance to try scrapbooking and journaling, drawing and scribbling and creating your own story about motherhood.

These groups are informal, relaxed and baby-friendly (up to 12 months of age). Topics for discussion include:

– what it’s really like being a mum today,

– the expectations and pressures,

– handling change and coping strategies.

Bookings are essential due to limited spaces (and so we know how many biscuits to bring). Come connect with other mums in a warm, welcoming space.
