Psychoanalysis is a specific approach to the understanding of mental functioning and the treatment of mental distress. Psychoanalysis recognises that we have impulses, perceptions and thoughts, which we are not consciously aware of, and that conflicts in these unconscious aspects of our minds can give rise to disturbance and symptoms. Treatment aims to help an individual through careful listening to what they have to say and then offering an understanding for consideration by the patient.

Psychoanalytic treatment is not superficial or just at the level of intellectual problem-solving. It involves patient and analyst meetings five, or sometimes four, times a week for sessions of fifty minutes, usually over at least two or more years.

Such intensity and frequency are not for everyone. Some people find they are more suited to a less frequent form of treatment known as psychoanalytic psychotherapy.

The London Clinic of Psychoanalysis can help you find the right treatment with a consultation from a qualified and experienced psychoanalyst. A psychoanalytic consultation can help you to think about what is going on in your life, perhaps at a time of difficulty. It may be helpful in its own right, or it may result in a decision to go into analysis or analytic psychotherapy.

If that is the case, their Clinic Referrals Service can put you in touch with a psychoanalyst for private treatment.

Alternatively, you could be offered low-fee psychoanalysis through the Clinic. Following consultation, the consulting analyst may discuss with you the possibility of low-fee psychoanalysis available through our Clinical Services. There are a limited number of low-fee places each year – we ask for a minimum fee per session of £5. Psychoanalysis is open-ended and is not a short-term treatment, so do bear in mind that it is likely to continue for two to three years or more.
